Bring on the New Year! Do you love the thought of a new beginning, goal setting and making resolutions? If the answer is yes, I am sure you will have already put pen to paper and thought long and hard about what changes you want to make. If you are a sceptic to the benefits of New Year’s resolutions, you are not alone. 75% of resolutions will be continued through the first week of January, but only 46% make it past six months. University of Scranton also stated that 39% of people in their twenties will achieve their resolution each year while only 14% of people over 50 year will achieve theirs. So with those statistics, instead of looking at New Year’s Resolutions, let’s focus on the word SOLUTION, specifically career solutions.

Many AOY Students study while they work and the reason why they study are similar to the most popular career resolutions

  • Get a raise or promotion: Studying can assist you in getting the skills needed to get a promotion or increase your income.
  • Get a new job: Many students study in order to improve their resume and be able to get the job or career of their dreams.
  • Network more effectively: While you study you can network with people in a similar field of study and learn from other learners.
  • Improve your relationship with your boss and/or co- workers: Everyone likes to have good work relationships and studying further gives you something to discuss with your peers and your boss. Sharing your desire to improve your skills will definitely impress your superiors.
  • Enhance your communication skills: Studying further improves communication skills as we feel more empowered by new knowledge and skills.
  • Improve your knowledge and skills: Studying improves your knowledge and skills in your chosen career and that is the reason for studying.

What’s interesting to note is that other top career resolutions include improving work attitude, becoming more organised, reducing work stress and improving work-life balance. So if it is your goal is to be recognised within your company and get a raise or promotion, or if you desire a new job, we would suggest you implement these top 3 tips:

Tip 1: Look at your work attitude and ask yourself this simple question: Are you grateful for your job? Do you appreciate your work place and the ability to work and earn an income? Many people never think of having an attitude of gratitude towards their work, unless they have experienced retrenchment or job loss. This “loss” immediately puts things into perspective. Being grateful and having a positive attitude to ones work has many benefits, from increased confidence to feeling happier and more content.Tip 2: Think like an entrepreneur, or within your company see yourself as an “intrapreneur.” Many companies encourage an “owner mentality,” meaning that you should take ownership and responsibility. Ask yourself, if you were the owner of the company, what would you do differently? This often encourages new ideas which may streamline work flow, or even improve profit in your business.Tip 3: Take charge of your own education and talent development. We cannot rely on educational institutions or on our organizations to give us all of the necessary educational content that is needed to develop professionally and personally. Think of the knowledge gaps you may have and sign up for one of our dynamic short courses or longer certificate and diploma courses that will catapult you towards a successful future.
