The Big Why?

Ever wondered why some people succeed where others fail? Just this past week at a conference I learnt the answer to this question. It was an “a-ha” moment as I was exposed to the thinking of the great Simon Sinek and his book, “Start with why”.
In this book he explores why some companies and people are able to achieve things that, for others, seem unachievable? He asks the question: “Why is it that Apple is so innovative and why did Martin Luther King lead the civil rights movement or why was it that the Wright Brothers were able to figure out how to fly a plane when all others had failed before them?” The common question here is why?

Simon Sinek made an incredible discovery that profoundly changed his view on the world. This discovery was a pattern and he discovered that all leaders think, act and communicate the exact same way that is the opposite to everyone else. He decoded this solution and he calls it “the world’s simplest idea or the golden circle”. Why, How and What.

Studies have shown that 80% of people in America do not have their dream job. Here at Academy of York, we always ask the reason why our students want to study. For the most part, our students are just like you and me, working South Africans and the reason why they want to study is usually one of the following:Desire to improve their lives either by getting a promotion or earning more. Increase their knowledge and get a qualification Explore a new career and they need new skillsStarting with the question WHY can be life changing and can be applied to every aspect of our lives. WHY do we work? What is the core reason or why do we react the way we do?

For Academy of York, our team know what we do and how we do it. But more importantly, we know WHY we do it. The reason why we exist is simple: We believe in education, we know that once a person completes their course they will feel more confident and have a better life. They can be employed, get a better job, increase their earning potential or get a job they truly love and enjoy.

If you keep the WHY in the centre of everything you have a much bigger chance of completing your studies successfully as you are able to inspire and motivate yourself to do what you need to do in order to complete your goal.

We hope that you are as inspired as we have been by Simon Sinek, “Start with Why” and we encourage you to learn more by listening to his TED talk on Youtube or by reading his book “Start with Why”.
